Hair –Psychology and Sex

Why do we care so much about our hair? After all, we can still be alive without it.
Yet how many times during the day do we touch, look or think about it?
Why does the way it looks, feel or behave affect our morale so much?
The answer is to do with sex.

It is important to appreciate hair in its role as a sexual object, between sexuality and hair: To caress someone’s hair, to fondle or play with it, even to smell it, is consciously or not a sexual act. How we style it, how its cut, the care we give it and the way we display it indicates to the world in a multitude of ways our sexual feelings, aggressions, insecurities, confidence or inhibitions.
Hair is the single most part of our anatomy affecting our psyche. We can wear the most fashionable clothes, the most expensive jewelry, our skin can be flawless, but if our hair is not right, we don’t feel good
Female hair is particularly seen as seductive and essentially sexual in meaning. Historically for instance; Red heads have traditionally been thought of a wonton: in the middle ages they were seen as witches and charged with luring men to make pacts with the Devil [I have many red haired clients who are testament against this theory]. Blondes are viewed as vulnerable, whilst Dark haired women are threatening.
Women with long, lustrous hair send messages of sexual fertility. It is no coincidence that mermaids are portrayed with long flowing hair, whilst luring men to their deaths.
The most popular female film stars, models and singers, past and present, have long loose hair. Long hair is thought of as being more feminine, softer and more sensual.
For men, hair is symbolic of virility and strength. This symbolism is so powerful that a Samson myth is common in most cultures.
In many ways, hair, more than eyes, is the sexual mirror of the soul. We long for it to be full and beautiful, and we cast covetous eyes on the hair of others. We use it to draw attention to ourselves, to attract and entice, to flaunt and seduce.
We take more care of it and spend more time and money than any other part of our body. The joy of good looking, well-behaved hair, framing our face gives a psychological boost second to none.
